Plantimate ™ “patent pending” growing system has delivered socioeconomic and ecological sustainable impact during and after the COP26 UN Climate Conference at the BlueGreen Glasgow Project. A COP26 legacy project that will deliver positive impact to visitors and citizens of Glasgow for years to come.
1. THE ECO HUB
A key part of the Blue Green Project is the ‘Eco Hub’. A mix of permanent structures that will provide space for discussion, educational programs, conferences, workshops and shelter from the often volatile British weather.
In addition, it is a demonstration site for various growing technologies. Plantimate provides the mid range technology in the form of flat packed vertical farming. This compliments a range of growing techniques ranging from ‘traditional’ in soil cultivation through to higher tech grow lights and closed loop systems of aquaponics.
This is delivered with a range of partners providing a broad range of expertise designed to provide holistic benefits to enhance the site’s core urban farm and ecosystem offering.
2. THE SITE (GLASGOW GOVAN DRY DOCKS FORMER INDUSTRIAL SITE)
The site is at the old Graven Dry Docks in the Govan area of Glasgow on the south bank of the River Clyde. Built in the mid 1800’s it is an area that has played a significant role in the UK’s industrial heritage.
Due to varying socioeconomic factors the site closed in 1987 and has been derelict since. In anticipation for COP26, the Glasgow based company Seawater Solutions prepared the site as an Urban Ecosystem that would transform the derelict land into an area of multiple socioeconomic and ecological regeneration. This is accomplished with a variety of regeneration and growing techniques that allows the site to host a rich tapestry of green and blue infrastructure providing multiple benefits, including food production, carbon capture, educational programs and vertical farming to name but a few.
It’s opening coincided with the COP26 UN Climate Conference which was held at the neighbouring site. What is more, it is a legacy project and will operate for years to come, long after the actual COP26 conference itself.
For nearly three decades the UN has been bringing together almost every country on earth for global climate summits called COPs (Conference of the Parties). In that time climate change has gone from being a fringe issue to to a global priority.
Held in a different location every year in 2021 it was held in Glasgow, United Kingdom. This particular conference was of significant importance due to the Covid pandemic raising serious questions about how we live and operate as a society. In addition, steadily increasing incidents of climate change related disasters from crop failure to severe flooding are increasing the urgency to take action on climate change at all levels of society.
At Plantimate we aim to play our part in addressing those challenges.
